Hazardous Devices Team (Bomb Squad)
Commander, Montgomery - 334-353-1100
In 1971, in recognition of the need for explosive support to local, county, and
state law enforcement agencies, the Alabama Department of Public Safety created
a bomb squad. The bomb squad provides support to all counties in Alabama. The ABI
bomb squad has six bomb technicians strategically located throughout the state.
Four of the bomb technicians are explosive detector canine handlers and two are
military Explosive Ordnance Technicians.
The Bomb Squad member’s duties include the evaluation, render-safe, removal, and
destruction of explosive items that threaten personnel or property. Routine support
includes training, explosive awareness classes, canine sweeps, procedure review,
and support for special events. Support requests should be made through the Chief
of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
If there is an emergency request, the request should be made by contacting Captain
Jerry Conner, Lieutenant Ron Short, Sergeant Clay Barnes, or the Bomb Technician
in your area. Emergency request can also be made through any Highway Patrol post.
