Alabama Center for Missing and Exploited Children

The Alabama Center for Missing and Exploited Children functions within the Criminal Investigation Support Group as the state's central repository for information on children and other persons missing in Alabama and other states. CISG personnel work with national and state agencies to provide resources to locate and recover missing children and assist in identifying unidentified living and deceased persons.

The Alabama Center for Missing and Exploited Children was founded on March 22, 1985, and has helped hundreds of missing children and adults return home during its 26 years of operation. Former Governor George C. Wallace signed the executive order establishing the Missing Children Bureau within the Department of Public Safety March 22, 1985. Then, as now, the major duty of the Center is to provide assistance and education to the public and law enforcement in finding and returning missing persons.

The Missing Children Unit personnel work as liaison between local law enforcement agencies and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which operates as a non-profit agency under the U.S. Department of Justice. Alabama is the Clearinghouse for Missing Children. The Unit prepares photo flyers of missing children and posts them to the website. The Unit also has a 24-hour, toll-free hotline (1-800-228-7688) for reporting a missing child or providing information about a missing child.

The Alabama Center for Missing & Exploited Children also is responsible for the AMBER Alert Program. The Center coordinates with the Department of Public Safety in pushing the AMBER Alert through the EAS (Emergency Alert System) for the State of Alabama.
