Department Chaplains

The Department of Public Safety chaplains program, originally established in the early 1960's and coordinated by Capt. John G. Henderson, was re-established Oct. 15, 1994.

Through this program, pastors of various faiths volunteer to serve as non-denominational chaplains for the Department of Public Safety. These dedicated individuals complete a 16-hour chaplain's seminar at the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center and are prepared to assist all members of the department.

All chaplains are invited to participate in post, troop or unit meetings, as well as all departmental social functions. They are allowed to ride with troopers on patrol. Chaplains are available to assist troopers in delivering death messages and to assist in departmental funerals and in providing confidential counseling of departmental members and their immediate families as requested. The chaplains are provided with an identification card/clip-on badge. They wear civilian attire and are not armed.

For additional information regarding the Department of Public Safety chaplains please contact the Chaplain Program Coordinator at 334-353-9194.
